Brisbane’s Great South Run
We attended Brisbane’s Great South Run on Sunday morning and no doubt missed out on our Sunday morning sleep in, but it was well worth it! The 4:30am start for us was definitely not easy but we were greeted with big smiles from those who were all ready to go for the exciting day ahead.
Brisbane’s Great South Run is the city’s newest half marathon and guests began trickling in by around 5:00am to get their race packs, numbers and start preparation for the long runs to come. And the warm ups wouldn’t have been complete without one (or two) cups of well needed coffee! The participants gathered at Col Bennett Park Algester for the races ahead on the newly winded, upgraded, super fast and flat Paradise Road which traces its way through a bushland setting along Oxley Creek.
The first race of the day soon began, The Bendigo Bank Half Marathon, with participants eagerly gathered at the start line. The race was led by Councillor Angela Owen and Lord Mayor Graham Quirk who were waiting in the back of a BMW for the gun to sound. The half marathon was followed by the LJ Hooker Algester 10km Run which was not for the faint hearted either, and participants had a quick break to catch their breath after this race. There were plenty of apples, muffins and energy drinks waiting for all of those who ran incredibly in the first two races, and some physiotherapy on hand for those who were feeling particularly weary… or for those who would go on to compete in yet another race! Runners were also congratulated that placed for the half marathon and 10km runs at this point in the morning. By now the sun had well and truly risen and we were ready to go again.
After the runners refuelled the Tailwind Nutrition Australia 5km Run kicked off. By this point, we were still seeing some of the most determined participants of the morning coming in from the half marathon run and it was an inspiring sight to have seen. Completing their run at the 3 hour mark by this time, the runners still showed no signs of giving up and were absolutely determined to finish what they had started.
And of course they saved the best for last, the McDonald’s BP Logan Motorway 2.6km kids dash! This race featured 3 separate categories and we saw some little competitors as young as 4 years old running to their hearts content. Such a fun race to watch and some future Aussie Olympian in the mix for sure! After the prize giving ceremony for the kids we were well and truly ready to head home to nap for the rest of our Sunday!
Throughout the day there was an array of entertainment on offer with booths from Telstra, The Calamvale Hotel, BL Physio, Queensland Rail and Buzvil, just to name a few. Sponsors on the day included The Athlete’s Foot, Compres Sport, Q Run, ASA, Pat 42.2, CSO Australia, Qoolmart.com, Supersport Images, Algester Little Athletics Centre, Travis Creative and Brisbane City Council. All event proceeds went to support persons in the local community experiencing domestic violence through our charity partners RizeUp Australia, Women’s Legal Service Queensland & Run 2 Give Foundation. Truly an amazing cause.
Thank you for having us at 2017 Brisbane’s Great South Run!
